Also, my friend and Chiropractor, Dr. Livia Valle, adjusted my spine 4-5 times per week during this training as my neurologist warned me that if I attempted the marathon I would probably wind up needing a colostomy bag.  Guess what, I did several marathons and although my back has not gotten better, it has also not gotten worse.  Enough about that, if you want to read my story, click HERE: Tonya's personal journey.

HYPNOSIS is a natural state of  selective focused attention in which a person allows themselves to be highly responsive to suggestion or direction. In other words, the patient is guided into a trance state, where the critical portion of the mind does not distract the patient (see the picture above - we need to access the subconscious mind). The patient is so focused on the trance that he or she will only hear the voice of his or her hypnotherapist.

The most frequent clinical uses of hypnosis include: breaking bad habits, overcoming insomnia, recalling forgotten experiences, and as an anesthetic for managing pain.

Hypnotherapy (Hypnosis + Therapy) can be used to help release and heal a huge range of issues.  Hypnosis for insomnia, weight loss, smoking cessation and anxiety are only some of the commonly treated issues. Using hypnosis, we can reprogram our subconscious and change how we perceive things. This change in perception then enables us to change our actions, behaviors and how we respond. It can also help our bodies to function better, which in turn leads to better health and wellbeing.

Your mind and body are part of the same energy system and interact with each other in response to internal and external stimuli. When you are having a bad day, your mind is working flat out, and stress accumulates in your body. Your body will react to whatever changes your mind goes through. Our subconscious houses all of our emotions, all the parts of our personality, how we react to situations, the roles we play in life and more. In fact, every experience we’ve ever had is stored away and becomes some part of the way we evaluate information and in turn, our behaviors and reactions to everyday life situations.

How Does Hypnosis Work?

When you are in hypnosis, the subconscious mind accepts suggestions easily. With these types of natural trance, you are aware of your surroundings and able to hear everything that is going on. This is the same as when in a hypnotherapy session. Hypnosis therapy is about using the therapeutic language to talk directly with your subconscious mind, helping to make those changes while allowing your conscious mind to be the observer. You may experience cycles of going into lighter and deeper levels during the session, but you will always be aware of the words and presence of your thoughts.

Subconscious Mind Power

Hypnosis can also be used for subconscious exploration, to better understand underlying motivations or identify whether past events or experiences are associated with causing a problem or repeating pattern or a limiting belief in the client’s life. It’s like pulling a thorn out – getting to the cause of an issue and releasing it. We also use regression therapy, including Past Life Regression therapy where needed to go back to the core of the issue, whether it is from this lifetime or a previous lifetime, to help release and break you free from repeating patterns and cycles.

Reprogramming The Subconscious Mind

At the Reiman Training Center, we personalize your session to your needs as well as your world. There are different ways that hypnosis can be used in a treatment session and this is ultimately determined by what you need.  We work with you to enable healing and change, to empower you to see things differently and to release and heal from past hurts and situations. This lets you be free to move forward with your life.

First, we focus on encouragement in the use of the imagination – mental imagery is very powerful, especially in this focused state of attention and this can be used to bring about change and create the new thought patterns and behaviours. Second, we can use hypnosis to present ideas or positive suggestions in this state of concentrated attention. These ideas and suggestions that are compatible with what the client wants, has a more powerful impact on the mind.

The above left photo is me completing the New York City Marathon. Do you know how I did it? I ran the marathon in a state of WAKING self-hypnosis.  Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you, I am not a runner. I loathe running. However,  one year I decided my birthday present to myself would be a challenge of perseverance: running the New York City Marathon.

I have two herniated and one bulging disc in my lower back and one in my neck so the challenge is a big one. I also have two brain tumors, a mass in my pericardium and thyroid nodules.  To boot, When I made this decision, I had never run further than five miles.

Why do I share this?  One reason. Hypnosis can help change your life. It changed mine.  I gave birth to my son, Jaidan, while "under" hypnosis.  It was a beautiful, peaceful experience.  You can ask my husband how my first two babes came into the world - he'll tell you it was magnificent, than ask him if either was peaceful.

8 MAR (8 Minute Anxiety Relief)

HELP ME RELAX!
Here is a method that I use regularly with those that suffer from anxiety.

First, you’ll learn and practice deep diaphragmatic breathing and than you will move on to the 5-4-3-2-1 technique.

It stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which works in the opposite way to the sympathetic nervous system. Parasympathetic nervous system slows your cardiovascular system and relaxes your muscles.

Diaphragmatic breathing encourages full oxygen exchange, it relaxes the muscles, massages the internal organs, and allows more oxygen to flow through your body. It slows your heart rate and lowers your blood pressure.

DO YOUR BREATHING:
Heres how:  Find a quiet, comfortable place to sit or lie down. First, take a normal breath. Then try a deep breath: Breathe in slowly through your nose, allowing your chest and lower belly to rise as you fill your lungs. Let your abdomen expand fully (its helpful if you put your hand on your belly to feel the rise and fall). Now breathe out slowly through your mouth (or your nose, if that feels more natural).

All you need to do is 10 to feel the difference.

Think about it this way – Have you ever seen a baby breathe? Their bellies rise up and fall down gently and rhythmically.  This is the way we were meant to breathe but life happens and we feel the need to speed up everything, even our breathing.

TECHNIQUE 5-4-3-2-1

If you feel you aren’t quite relaxed enough yet, move on to the 5-4-3-2-1 technique.

Taking these 5 steps after you’ve done your breathing can significantly help reduce symptoms of anxiety other unwanted emotions or thoughts. Here again, you must remember to breathe. Just like the above technique, slow, deep, long breathing can help maintain a sense of calm. This next step is a grounding technique, it helps to bring you into a state of presenting thinking through external factors.

Sit comfortably and quietly and just take NOTE of:

FIVE things you see around you. Say them in your head.  A ceiling fan, a pair of shoes, maybe even a picture. Mentally state 5 things you see.

FOUR things you can touch around you (you do NOT need to touch them, just list them in your mind). Maybe this is your hair, your thighs (stroking the hair and thighs relaxes people automatically as does the thought of it doing so), a carpet or a pillow. List in mind the 4 things you can feel.

THREE things you hear. This needs to be external, silence your mind and listen to your surroundings; maybe you can hear a clock, an air conditioner, maybe you hear a washing machine. List three things that are audible in this moment.

TWO things you can smell. This one takes some concentration, however, it can be done with practice. Maybe you smell an air freshener, a bar of soap, your own natural scent, a lemon being sliced in half and the juices flowing down (you might salivate).

ONE thing you can taste. What does the inside of your mouth taste like, gum, coffee, or your lunch? Focus on your mouth as the last step and take in what you can taste.

These five steps are a way to ground yourself in the NOW! Take you out of your head and help stop you flooded thoughts. In moments of anxiety it is important to stay present and focused to gain relief.

Although without hypnosis, I would not have been able to train (4am trainings because I am slow) every day nor would I have been able to RUN the entire 26.2 miles, I need to give credit where credit is due.   This book (which is not a promo because they don't even know I talk about it) taught me a lot about how to train - that part was key to my understanding some of the crazy things I had to do. .
